People may doubt the ethics/ politics of this project but one fact that is indisputable; this new lifestyle is by far cheaper and infinitely more healthy (physically and mentally) than my normal regime.

1. It's cheaper: my outgoings have dropped substantially. With no retail therapy as a leisure option, I've only bought stuff that I actually need, which isn't very much beyond food and cleaning supplies. All those bottles of Evian, packets of Marlboros and the odd impulse purchase on the high street add up. As long as I plan my day carefully, I don't really miss those 'luxuries' much at all. Well, not much.

2. It's healthier: the chemicals in all my cosmetic and cleaning products are gone since I have started making my own. Formaldehyde, phenol, benzene, toluene, and xylene (chemicals that are cancer causing and toxic to the immune system) are found in most household cleaners, cosmetics and processed food. A study by the Yale School of Medicine revealed that people who are exposed to cleaning products regularly have a significantly higher risk of brain cancer. Need I say more?

3. Its more fulfilling: with no TV to fill parts of the day, I am starting to read much more. I'm having to re-learn how to entertain myself… read a book, get out of the flat and do something. After a normal working day, the missus and I would both slump in front of the TV until we fell asleep; that’s all changing. Saturday morning would normally be spent roaming around the high street looking for things to buy that I couldn't afford and didn't really need. Now I'm forced to do something less boring instead.
Like I say, its early days; perhaps this is the honeymoon period before I start to feel completely paranoid and disconnected and start to grow dreadlocks and listen to Chumbawamba. This week, I pick up my generic mobile phone and switch contracts from Orange to the Phone Co-Operative. Giving up the fags has been hell, so I'm off to the hypnotherapist. Has anyone out there managed to kick the habit using hypnotists? It would be useful to know.

Weekend walk in the country with us two and the dog perhaps??
Kirsty and Jacks.
ah i'd love to... a chance to get away from all the brand madness up town. through i burrnt my hunter wellies....
so, neil, are you going to start brewing your own beer now that you are no longer able to sup on a bottle of becks or hooegarden?
I salute you.
Think its grand that you're giving the brand the heave-ho. Good luck.
Hey Neil,
WOW, your burning looked fantastic! I sent the video clip onto Hunt so he'll have it when he wants to forward it all over the states. Will look for some of my formulas from my "hippie" days - didn't realize you were even giving up toothpaste and stuff like that! Hugs to you and Jules.
Dear Neil,
A sip of Pepsi on a hot summer day. Lighting a Marlboro to calm down from a shit storm at the office.
Screamadelica on your headphones when you're stoned at two in the morning. The Office on DVD when you're hungover at two in the afternoon.
A brand-new NME while riding the underground to the other side of town. A box of Durex for a bed-and-breakfast weekend with some hot new bird.
Tossing on your New Balance trainers for a mellow night at the pub. Texting your friends a hilarious joke, courtesy of BlackBerry.
Sincerely,
The Rhetorical Letter Writer
PS Johnnie Walker Black! Cadbury Chocolates!
Dear Adam P, I'm a recovering alcoholic, so booze isn't high on my list of brands I'll miss. Its soda water and a piece of lime down the pub for me. Yes I know, that does sound very dull.
Dear Virginia Gardener
glad you saw the video! I'm desperate to come over and see you all again. London is so miserable at the moment! What's Virginia like at Xmas time?
Your bonfire reminded me of Michael Landy's 'Breakdown'. (I wonder how he's doing now.)
I'm not sure what to make of this : is it the ultimate act of 'conspicuous consumption'? Maybe it's something deeper. When I saw the Berlin Wall come down, which signalled 'the Collapse of Communism' I remember thinking that the Collapse of Capitalism would follow, sooner or later. And look at us now! Every time we shop at the mall or the supermarket we are committing an act of terrorism. ( remember Giuliani's message to the people of New York after 9/11 : "Spend")
Suppose we all burned our branded stuff : it would show us how much our lives revolve around consumption, branded or not.
I think it is a great thing that none of the stuff was given to charity : what does it mean when you spend pennies on a wrong, which you have spent millions on to create in the first place? To me this bonfire, much like its Florentine predecessor, is like a little bell, signalling the beginning of the end of our way of life.
Boffo, Neil ... caught the Bonfire on BBC via the internet. Now that you're brandless and adrift, do join us for that postponed sail on the Chesapeake, and we'll show you how to anchor again.
Bert
many thanks for such a positive message. I'm not sure how Michael Landy is doing... I tried to interview him for my book but he never returns my calls.
Although I'm not from NY, I do indeed remember the Mayor's message... lets fight these terrorists by spending!
Kurt
how about Xmas in Virginia? Jules and I were talking about it!
OK, you've got me.
I confess to initial cynicism but you've made me rethink.
Good luck - and thanks!
Now if I'm not mistaken you're turning yourself into a brand - the guy who burned all his stuff so he can sell a book - right? Why not burn yourself? Now, that would have been far more impressive and not just another lame stunt by just another try hard Shoredicth twat (yep we know about your history). Well done Nathan Barley and good luck.
Isn't it funny how things go! I just read on your blog about the phone co-operative and thought it sounded like a good idea, googled them and it's based less than five miles from my house and I had no idea it was there.
I think what you're doing is wonderful, I only wish I had the guts to do the same :)
You say you spend your time reading books, are they unbranded books?
Can you use hypnosis and self hypnosis to improve your health?
Well in 1958 the American Psychological Association, the American Medical Association and The British Medical Association concluded that hypnosis was indeed a viable therapeutic tool and approved its medical use.
Although there are many theories, no-one really knows how or why hypnosis works. However, the benefits of its use are clear. It has been used successfully in all manner of treatments from IBS to pre-surgery relaxation and post-surgery pain relief.
Olympic athletes, footballers, basketball layers, golfers etc., have known about the power of the mind for some decades now (perhaps the elite knew even further back). It has been shown in medical studies that when you visualise yourself performing a task your muscles respond in exactly the same way as they would if you were actually doing the task. Sports psychologist have used this to their, and their clients, advantage for years now.
The power of the mind is becoming more evident to the medical establishment as well. Everyone knows about the beneficial effects of using a placebo. It seems that if the mind is convinced that something is true then it will make it true even if the situation appears to be the exact of opposite in the 'real world'!
It seems that the quickest way to get the mind to accept a new belief is through hypnosis and self hypnosis. Phobias can be eliminated in one session now and new beliefs planted in the same aount of time.
The use of hypnosis as a weight-loss tool is well written about as its effectiveness in quitting smoking! It has been used very effectively in non-surgical breast enhancement and treating erectile dysfunction. So it is not very hard to believe that it could be used to convince the mind that health is abundant or that a particular unhealthy situation is reversing itself.
Once the mind becomes convinced that an unhealthy situation no longer exists and that health is abundant then just like the visualiser who makes his/her muscles respond to a mental image the person in discomfort or dis-ease can make his/her body begin to repair itself. Makes sense right!
No-one can predict the scope of hypnosis for healing. However, everyone knows of miracle healings that have taken place when a sick person has visited a spiritual healer, bathed at Lourdes, prayed etc. If these healings can take place then I see no reason not to believe that hypnosis can have the same effect.
Unfortunately, no large scale studies have been undertaken, to my knowledge, that have tested the power of hypnosis to cure chronic or terminal illness but I do believe there is enough evidence to suggest it is a very beneficial tool in recovery. self hypnosis

What are your 50,000 thoughts a day creating?
Our thoughts create our reality. This is a simple truth known by all people involved on the spiritual path. It is one of the most taught universal principles in the personal development field. Yet it is one of the most misunderstood!
People practice visualisation, affirmations, they use hypnosis, subliminal programming or countless other tools to transform their lives. However they fail to recognise one key area in their lives that hinder these wonderful techniques from being effective.
They sit day after day visualising their perfect scene and yet nothing happens. Why? They have followed all the instructions to the letter! They have chanted and imagined! They have formed a colourful, vibrant scene in their minds and affirmed that this is their reality. Then all of a sudden things get worse! What is going on?
Would you like to know the secret? Would you like to know why these people get no results? Would you like to hear one powerful statement that explains everything?
Yes?
Good. I will tell you why these people get no results or even opposite results to those they are aiming for -simply because of the following truth. Consciously controlled thoughts such as visualisations do not materialise - ALL thoughts materialise!!!
Most people believe that if they visualise for 10 minutes a day their lives will magically transform. This is not the case. You must change your core thinking. You think approx. 50,000 thoughts a day. How many of those thoughts are working against your ten minute visualisation?
You can control the thoughts that enter your mind by changing the way you view the world. You can decide which thoughts you give energy to and which thoughts you discard.
The thoughts that you follow and give energy to become more dominant than the thoughts you discard. Your subconscious mind records these as your dominant picture on the issue at hand. You then move towards this picture because your subconscious mind starts making your outside world reflect the picture that you have stored internally.
Your mind should be on whatever you want. The picture you need to have is a positive vision of you already having achieved your goal. To realise this vision you need to focus and concentrate. Remember thoughts are real, they create your reality.
Let's say you have been visualising a new house. You spend your ten minutes in meditation picturing yourself living in your dream home. You finish your session and get up feeling positive that you will achieve your goal. Then during the day you get a heating bill through the post and exclaim "Oh no look how expensive this is I cannot afford to heat this house". Where is your focus in the present moment? What are you affirming? You are telling your subconscious mind that you cannot deal with what you have. You are affirming that your life is not how you want it to be. If you knew without doubt that within a week you would be moving to your new home would you honestly be worried about a heating bill? Perhaps other doubts creep in like "I should be happy with what I have", or "I will never get this house looking the way I want it" and so on and so on.
These thoughts that are not aligned with your goal. You are not giving complete attention to what you want. Whilst you are dealing with these other lines of thought your attention is not on your goal.
If you are aware of your thoughts you will suddenly realise that you have spent much more energy on counter productive thoughts than on creating a dominant picture of the goal you want.
Point your focus in the direction of you're the life you want. Think about what you want NOT what you don't want. It's that simple.
Your focus determines your reality. Change your focus and you change your life. The Secret
yeah - I am just a first time blog browser and i read that you are interested in giving up smokes - I was never under hypnoses. I quit smoking when my son was 14 turning 15 and he asked me to quit just before his birthday so I gave him that as a gift becuz the way he put was, "Mom. I know you have been smoking cigarettes more than you used to and I know they are not good for you or me so could you please quit smoking because I sure want to know you when you get older and it would be nice to know that you will be older and not smoking!" I also gave him a gift of a stereo and dinner and a movie night out. That was nine years ago ago and I quit and smoked only once for three months and now I have quit again since 2 years this past summer. Good luck with your efforts - true will power rules and rebuilds self esteem and pride.
I enjoyed reading your expression of daily blogery... I mostly blog on Netlog - DarlinJoy
almost finished your book and I am very impressed. I find it amazing the hostility you encountered - are people actually threatened by the stand you're taking? I think I'm relatively brand-free compared to most (e.g., no TV) but I'm now inspired to go that extra step...
Thanks.
Grant G, London
hello grant
well thanks for reading the book!
i wonder what the figure is for TV-free households in the UK? I bet its quite a few, and not all of us ae completely mad.
i'm not sure why peole are so threatened. people like us are pissing in the torrential wind of consumer culture, but any bit of dissent sems to cause irritation. perhaps thats a good thing, no?
I've almost finished reading your book and have to say I really admire you for what you've done. I've always been interested in advertising campaigns and have prided myself on not falling for them. Bit reading your book has made me realise we're all susceptible, even if it's subconscious. I've been reading your book with an open mind, wondering whether or not living without brands is possible. I still don't know, but I'm so impressed that you took the stand and followed your instincts through. Brilliant!
book's great. Well written and well documented.
Well done.
One step at the time, as they say...
